Survey Reveals Work Has Negative Impact on Employee Mental Health

A recent SHRM (Society of Human Resource Management) survey found that 1 in 3 U.S. employees say their job has had a negative impact in their health over the past six months. Enhancing mental health support may be one way that employers can attract and retain their workers.

 

Key Survey Findings

Here are some key findings from the 1,000 employees surveyed in March of 2023.

  • 30% of workers said their job has made them feel overwhelmed
  • 45% of employees have higher expectations for the mental health support their organizations should provide than last year
  • 29% of employees said work made them feel anxious at least once a week

 

Takeaways

There are many ways that employers can offer mental health support and resources. Surveyed employees expressed interested in the following:

  • Mental health days – 58%
  • Free or subsidized virtual mental health services – 35%
  • Mental health coverage in health plans – 35%
  • Mindfulness and yoga classes – 26%
  • Employee assistance programs – 23%
  • Mental health apps – 21%
  • Mental support groups – 16%
  • Mandatory mental health training for managers and employees – 16%
