Despite President Barack Obama's promise that Americans could keep their current health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), many are experiencing changes to their insurance benefits. However, the president is working with his staff and members of Congress to come up with a solution.
President Obama recently made headlines when many Americans found out their plans were being canceled by their insurance companies due to the ACA. According to an op-ed piece for Fox News, it's estimated that 2 million Americans saw their insurance canceled because the plans don't adhere to ACA guidelines. While the piece suggested these strict requirements under healthcare reform benefit Americans, the president and lawmakers are attempting to fix this growing issue canceled converge. The State, a Southern news source, reported bills have been proposed in both the Senate and the House of Representatives to stop the cancelations.
Although Americans are now able to find healthcare coverage that complies with the ACA through the federal and state marketplaces, many people may still want to keep their current plans.
"A promise was made and this legislation will ensure that this promise is kept," Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La. and the senator who introduced one of the proposed bills, said in a press release. "For many consumers, plans in the marketplaces may offer superior coverage at a good value that saves them money. But people should be able to keep their plans if they want to."
