PA, FL highest for tax subsidy eligibility

A study from the Kaiser Family Foundation found Florida and Pennsylvania are among the states with the most residents who may be eligible for tax credits for health insurance benefits.

The study conducted a state-by-state analysis of how many residents fit government guidelines for subsidy eligibility. The KFF study used data from the 2012 and 2013 Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplement. To receive tax credits, residents must be residing legally within the country, fit within a specified income range and choose an exchange-offered plan. The study found this makes 1,587,000 Floridians and 715,000 Pennsylvanians potentially eligible. In addition, 2,545,000 Floridians and 1,276,000 Pennsylvanians may enter the marketplaces to obtain health coverage.

According to WUSF Public Media, a local Florida news source, Florida is one of three states that make up nearly one-third of Americans who fit within the Affordable Care Act's tax credit requirements for federal assistance. This means Florida has one of the largest populations of Americans who are eligible for subsidizes.

The Congressional Budget Office projects 20 million Americans who enroll in insurance benefits through the exchanges will receive government tax credits by 2018, according to the study.
