NE focuses on affordability of insurance exchange options

Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman recently opted to establish the state's mandated health insurance exchange without any assistance from the federal government, allowing local lawmakers and healthcare experts to decide how the web-based portal will be presented to the public.

Heineman has also selected a high deductible health insurance package to be the minimum standard for policies offered through the exchange, defining the essential benefits that will be covered for all residents. The health insurance package includes a $4,000 annual deductible for individuals and an $8,000 deductible for families, emphasizing a strong focus on affordability for residents.

“I want a Nebraska option that makes sense for our citizens,” Heineman said. “Providing affordable health insurance options for Nebraskans allows Nebraskans, not the federal government, to choose what is best for their needs.”

Steve Martin, president and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska, spoke up after Heineman made his decisions, predicting many glitches will likely be found while deploying the exchange, as policies, transactions and regulations are being launched that have never been attempted before. Residents should understand this is a learning process and remain patient.
