Summer brings sunshine, time off, and plenty of reasons to gather outdoors. From local fairs to community festivals, these events can be a highlight of the season, but they also come with risks such as heat-related illness, sun exposure, dehydration, crowd safety concerns, and foodborne illness. Before you head out, keep these practical tips in mind to help you stay safe, healthy, and ready to enjoy every moment:
- Plan ahead. Check the forecast, note key venue locations, and pick a meetup spot with your group.
- Check event policies. Check the venue’s website before you go so you know what items are allowed and can avoid delays at the entrance.
- Stay cool and hydrate. Choose lightweight, breathable clothing to stay comfortable in the heat, sip water consistently throughout the day, and make time for shade breaks so your body can cool down and recharge.
- Use sun protection. Protect your skin by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen before you head outside and reapplying it every two hours throughout the day. For more coverage, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
- Protect your hearing. If you’ll be spending time in louder areas, bring earplugs or noise-canceling headphones to help protect your hearing and make the experience more comfortable.
- Prioritize your personal safety. Use anti-theft bags, keep valuables close and stay aware of your surroundings to navigate crowds and avoid hazards.
- Eat and drink responsibility. Choose safe food vendors, or eat ahead if allowed, and balance alcohol or caffeine with water.
A little extra attention to health and safety can go a long way in helping you avoid common festival and fair risks while making the most of the experience. Download the bulletin for more details.
