COVID-19 Emergency Period Ending – The Impact to Your Health Plan

COVID-19 Emergency Period Ending

1 minute read

The COVID-19 national emergency and public health emergency (PHE) is scheduled to end on May 11, 2023. Employer-sponsored health plans will no longer have to follow these health plan rules once PHE ends:

  • COVID-19 diagnostic testing without cost sharing
  • COVID-19 vaccines covered by out-of-network providers
  • Standalone telehealth benefits

The COVID-19 outbreak period (which is tied to the national emergency) also extended certain plan deadlines including HIPAA special enrollment, COBRA continuation coverage, and claims and appeal procedures. The COVID-19 outbreak period will end 60 days after the national emergency. If the national emergency ends of May 11, 2023, the outbreak period will end on July 10, 2023. After this date, the deadlines will resume their normal deadline dates.
