A January 2025 survey by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) revealed that 25% of workers are unaware of their mental health benefits, and only 50% know how to access them through employer-sponsored insurance.

The survey polled over 2,000 full-time employees from companies with 100+ workers across various industries. NAMI found that only 20% of employees have received training on mental health conditions or symptoms, despite over 75% showing interest in learning about mental health benefits.

Despite a strong demand for mental health benefits, many employees don't use them. A separate One Medical survey found that 45% of employees lack time, 25% feel embarrassed, and 22% worry about costs. This report demonstrates the stigma and judgement surrounding mental health issues persist in many workplaces, with over half of employees comfortable discussing it with friends or managers, but only 39% with Human Resources.

Employer Takeaway

The NAMI survey emphasizes the importance of employers raising awareness about available resources. To boost mental health benefits usage, employers should share benefits information through multiple channels, offer training, and equip managers to communicate resources throughout the year.
