Employee Satisfaction Levels: HDHP vs. Traditional Health Plans

Employee Satisfaction Levels: HDHP vs. Traditional Health Plans

1 minute read

A recent survey found that consumers with high deductible health plans (HDHPs) were less satisfied with their coverage than those with the traditional plans. Only around 50% of HDHP enrollees were extremely or very satisfied with their plan versus two-thirds of traditional plan enrollees.

Key Findings

Here are some key findings from The Employee Benefit Research Institute and Greenwald Research’s latest Consumer Engagement in Health Care Survey.

  • When asked about the cost of prescription drugs, 63% of traditional plan enrollees were satisfied with the cost vs. 47% of HDHP plan enrollees.
  • When asked about the cost they paid for health care services, 57% of traditional plan enrollees were satisfied vs. 47% of HDHP plan enrollees.
  • HDHP enrollees spent more time during open enrollment selecting a health plan than traditional plan enrollee, even though most spent less than one hour deciding.
  • HDHP enrollees are more likely to use employer-provided tools to select their health plan than traditional plan enrollees
    • Used employee benefit guide: 58% HDHP plan enrollees vs. 38% traditional plan enrollees
    • Used online portal: 41% HDHP plan enrollees vs. 29% traditional plan enrollees
