As the largest generation in the U.S., millennials have a lot of power when it comes to shaping the future of healthcare. They seek more non-traditional care models like digital health care options, walk-in clinics, and cost comparison shopping.
Millennials want to take care of their own health on their own terms. While 85% of older generations have a primary care physician, only 45% of 18-29 year-olds and 28% of 30-49 year-olds do, according to a survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation. Over one third of millennials would rather visit a walk-in clinic then make an appointment to see their doctor (if they even have one).
When it comes to cost millennials are twice as likely to ask about cost estimates before getting treatment, even shopping around before making a final decision. They are also more likely to put off care due to costs.
How a millennial defines being ‘healthy’ is very different from the older generations. They see being healthy as healthy eating, not smoking, and exercising. Healthy is more than just not being sick. Health includes both the physical and mental side of health. Millennials use both holistic and non-traditional healthcare like homeopathic medicine and fitness perks.
Millennials want to be able to access all avenues of their healthcare online. It should be convenient, available, and accessible to all. This includes scheduling appointments, accessing medical records, and telehealth visits.
