Your mental health includes how you feel, think, and act. It also includes your social and emotional well-being.

Mental Health Statistics

Millions of people in the United States are affected by mental illness each year. One in five adults will experience a mental illness each year. And nearly 50% of people with a mental illness receive treatment. One in twenty-five adults live with a serious mental illness including bipolar disorder, major depression, or schizophrenia.

Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness month is a national movement in May to increase awareness about mental health, fight the stigma associated with it, celebrate recovery, and support Americans with mental illness and their families. It was first established in 1949.

Take Care of Yourself

Your mental health can affect your overall well-being. It can hinder your ability to make healthy lifestyle choices, think clearly, and combat chronic disease. Here are some good strategies for taking care of yourself:

  • Create healthy routines. Exercising, eating good foods, and getting enough sleep are all part of a healthy routine.
  • Own your feelings. Take time to identify your feelings. It can help you to better cope in challenging situations.
  • Connect with others. Spend time with loved ones. Connections can enrich your life and assist you through tough times.
  • Learn your triggers. Learn what things you respond negatively to can help you keep track of and be aware of how you react.
