The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently announced updates to its masking-wearing recommendations in the U.S. A new tool, the COVID-19 Community Levels, can help communities decide what prevention steps to take based on the latest data. The levels provide the CDC’s guidance on mask-wearing, as well as other topics like COVID-19 vaccines and testing.
It is recommended that individuals in high-risk areas continue to wear masks in indoor settings. About 70% of the U.S. population is currently in a low- or medium-risk county. For these counties, it’s no longer recommended to mask indoors. The new guidance also applies to K-12 schools, meaning that low or medium-risk counties no longer need to wear a mask as well.
Individuals are always welcome to wear a mask at any time if they feel safer with it. Anyone with symptoms, a positive test, or COVID-19 exposure should continue to wear a mask.
