Executive Orders Address Health Care Access

President Biden recently signed some executive actions to strengthen our access to affordable health care.

One executive order wants to increase access and expand enrollment to the Health Insurance Marketplace. It’s expected that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will establish a Special Enrollment Period due to the pandemic. The enrollment period is expected to run February 15 – May 15.

The executive order also directs federal agencies to reconsider policies and rules that could restrict American access to health care. It asks agencies to reexamine:

• Policies that undermine protections for people with pre-existing conditions
• Policies that reduce affordability of coverage or financial assistance
• Policies that undermine the Health Insurance Marketplace or other health insurance markets
• Demonstrations and waivers under the ACA and Medicaid that may undermine the programs or reduce coverage

The President also issued a memorandum rescinding regulations on reproductive health access.
