President Biden issued an executive order (EO) aimed at establishing standards for artificial intelligence (AI) relating to security, protecting privacy, advance equity and civil rights, and advocate for consumers and workers.

Directed Actions

The order builds on the voluntary commitments for 15 company leaders by:

  • Establishing an advanced cybersecurity program to find and fix software vulnerabilities
  • Ordering the development of a National Security Memorandum on AI use and security
  • Developing standards, tools, and tests regarding AI’s safety, trustworthiness, and security
  • Requiring top AI developers to share their safety test results with the U.S. government
  • Protecting against risks of using AI to create dangerous biological materials

The EO addresses privacy concerns, supports equity and civil rights, advances workers' rights, and promotes innovation and competition. It calls for data privacy legislation, prioritizes privacy-preserving techniques, addresses algorithmic discrimination, and expands AI research and collaboration.

To ensure the responsible and effective use of AI in government, the EO takes action by providing guidance for agencies on AI utilization, facilitating the acquisition of AI products and services, and expediting the hiring of AI professionals. The administration will collaborate with allies and partners to govern the development and implementation of AI. Download the bulletin for more details.
