The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention registered over 3.3 million deaths in 2020. This was the first year of the pandemic, and it marked the highest annual total of deaths the nation has ever recorded, with COVID-19 deaths contributing a significant number.
Among the top 10 causes of death included unintentional injuries (including drug overdoses) and diabetes. Paired with COVID-19, these increases factor into 2020’s record high deaths and a decrease in life expectancy (-1.8 years from 2019).
Although 2021 year-end findings are not yet available, COVID-19 fatalities are expected to remain a leading cause of death in the U.S. And with the emerging coronavirus Omicron variant, experts warn that the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to continue to have a major impact on Americans’ health.
