The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a statement expanding their recommendation for COVID-19 booster shots. Now all adults 18 years and older who received a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine can receive a booster shot at least six months after the second dose of their primary series.
Previous guidance had suggested that only certain populations receive the booster shots. This guidance also had stated that all adults who had received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, two or more months prior were also eligible for a booster shot.
Vaccine recipients can choose the type of booster shot they receive. Some may prefer their original vaccine type; others may elect to change it up.
This change will provide millions of more Americans access to the booster vaccine right before the winter holidays. Booster shots have demonstrated the ability to safely increase people’s protection against infection and severe outcomes. Booster vaccines are an important public health tool to strengthen our defenses against the virus as we enter the winter holidays. Individuals can find available vaccines near them at www.vaccines.gov.
