Both the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine booster shots have been authorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The agency also said it was ok to “mix and match” any of the COVID-19 vaccines, including Pfizer. So, an individual who has received a full dose of one vaccine brand can get a booster of another one.

An independent vaccine expert panel that advises the FDA recommended a half-dose Moderna booster for high-risk and older Americans six months after being fully vaccinated. They also recommended the J&J booster for anyone 18 and older who received that vaccine at least two months ago.

The booster shots are primarily recommended to protect those who are at high-risk of contracting a serious form of COVID-19. Medical experts have urged the public not to seek a booster shot unnecessarily.
