A Varied Exercise Routine May Support Healthy Aging

If your workouts look the same every week, new research suggests it may be time to add variety, as people who regularly mix different types of physical activity tend to live longer than those who rely on just one type of exercise.

Researchers followed more than 110,000 adults for 30 years and found that variety matters. Participants who mixed activities such as walking, swimming, gardening, yoga, and racquet sports had a 19% lower risk of death from all causes than those who stuck to a single type of exercise, even when total exercise time was similar.

Varying your physical activity matters. Different movements build strength, balance, flexibility, endurance, and coordination, while cross‑training can lower the risk of overuse injuries and help you stay resilient as you age. Even everyday activities like yard work or recreational sports add up and support better health.

You do not need intense workouts or special equipment. Health experts still recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week, and rotating activities can make it easier to stay consistent, keep motivation high, and avoid burnout from the same routine.
