The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently outlined an action plan to provide Americans with affordable and high-quality health care. The plan will further drive health equity across the Department of Health and Human Services. Health equity is defined as everyone getting a fair and just opportunity to attain optimal health.

The overall goal is to better identify and respond to health outcome inequities, coverage barriers, and care access. The CMS’s strategy aims to:

  • Close gaps in health care access, quality, and outcomes for underserved populations
  • Advocate for the highest quality outcomes and safest care for all people
  • Ensure the CMS engages with the communities it serves and is held accountable to them
  • Increase outreach efforts to enroll eligible people in the Health Insurance Marketplace, Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program
  • Expand and standardize the collection and use of data across CMS programs
  • Promote culturally and linguistically appropriate services

The CMS will regularly assemble industry stakeholders including insurance companies, state officials, and health care facilities to ensure sustained progress.
